Along with Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate is the industry standard for lubricating punches and dies. The percentage of magnesium stearate used is about 0.5% PER TABLET or 2 mg. What is Magnesium Stearate? Magnesium stearate is a fine white powder that sticks to your skin and is greasy to the touch. It’s a simple salt made up of two substances, a saturated fat called stearic acid and the mineral magnesium. It is the prime lubricant of the formula. It reduces friction at the point of contact between a tablet surface and the die wall during production reducing damage to your freshy made tablet. It will prevent your formula from sticking to the machine and it is unaffected by process variables (for example, flow, temperature, pressure and level) which occur spontaneously, and Magnesium stearate ensures that these surprises won't affect the pill process. Just like microcrystalline cellulose, it has a high flow rate and is inert.
