FDC powdered dye — These FD&C dyes are FOOD, DRUG AND COSMETIC GRADE and can be used anywhere a powdered coloring agent is desired THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH WATER. A suggested starting amount would be anywhere from .02 – 5 percent of the total volume and work upwards; however, start with a small amount as not much will be needed (and you can always add more), depending on the color desired. Colors can be mixed for unlimited possibilities! FD&C dyes can be used in beverages, glossy icings, syrups and gelatin desserts. These FD&C dyes can also be used in bath bombs and soaps. Use sparingly as powdered colors may stain clothing, hands, or mouth. NOTE: DRY INGREDIENTS ARE SOLD BY WEIGHT, NOT VOLUME!

What exactly are FD&C powdered dyes you might ask?
Well, they are water-soluble colorants that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FD&C = Food, Drug & Cosmetic).
Their key traits:  They dissolve completely in water creating a clear, transparent color. They are VERY STRONG (a little goes a long way) and they are typically used in liquids or water-based products.

Common uses are for beverages, glossy icings, syrups, Easter egg dying and gelatin desserts.

And just so you know — ALL dyes are considered “artificial”, unless they are “plant based” dyes.
