Our FDC powdered LAKE dyes are FOOD, DRUG AND COSMETIC GRADE and can be used anywhere a powdered coloring agent is desired. A suggested starting amount would be anywhere from .02 – 5 percent of the total volume and work upwards; however, start with a small amount as not much will be needed (and you can always add more), depending on the color desired. Colors can be mixed for unlimited possibilities! FDC dyes can be used in chocolates or other oil-based products, dry cake mixes, tableting powders and supplements, and any other application where water is prohibited. Use sparingly as powdered colors may stain clothing, hands, or mouth. Here’s an example of how to make pink dye from red dye using our TITANIUM DIOXIDE: (these same ratios hold true with all FDC powdered dyes). NOTE: DRY INGREDIENTS ARE SOLD BY WEIGHT, NOT VOLUME!
Starting ratios (by weight). To make a:
Light pink: use 1-part red lake to 8-12 parts titanium dioxide
Medium pink: use 1-part red lake to 4-6 parts titanium dioxide
Dark pink (almost red): use 1-part red lake to 1-3 parts titanium dioxide

A Lake dye is an insoluble material that tints by dispersion. They are produced by coloring an aluminum salt (not an elemental aluminum) substrate using FD&C dyes. They easily disperse in dry powders, cake mixes, oils and fats. Lake dyes do not need to be bloomed, as they’ve been colored using bloomed dyes. The color in the jar is the color of the dye when it’s used. These Lake dyes are best used for: tablet making, capsules, cosmetics – including lipstick, rouge and powders. In food products, they are best used in oils, chocolates and candy melts.
Want to make a water-based dye or want to use them with any water-based product, such as a liquid food coloring. You “can” use the lake dyes, but it becomes more complicated. Key traits of FDC dye: they dissolve completely in water, create a clear and transparent color, are very strong (a little goes a long way), and are typically used in liquids or water-based products. Common uses are beverages, gelatin desserts, glossy icings and syrups. Can you use our FDC dyes in tableting, capsules or other powdered ingredients? Yes, you can (!!), as long as you don’t need to use water in the “mix”.
